What if you could help fight cancer with your mobile phone? With Vodafone Foundation’s DreamLab app you can – and all while you’re asleep.

In the UK, someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes. And, although survival rates have doubled in the last forty years, the day when all cancers are cured is still a long way off. That’s why it’s so important for everyone to support every effort being made to beat it.

You may think that making a donation is the only way to join the fight against cancer. But it’s not the only way to make a real difference; technology has changed everything.

DreamLab is the free app from the Vodafone Foundation, and it’s taking on cancer one smartphone at a time. All you have to do is download the app, charge your phone overnight and let technology do the rest. While you sleep, DreamLab taps into the unused processing power of your smartphone.

When you run DreamLab, your smartphone joins a virtual supercomputer network, with the ability to process billions of calculations. What would normally take one computer three hundred years to complete, only takes 100,000 smartphones three months. So as more people use the app, the closer we are to a cancer-free world.

So far, tens of thousands of people have downloaded DreamLab including Star Wars actor, John Boyega. We caught up with the Hollywood star at Imperial College London to find out how this innovation is speeding up time in the fight against cancer.

Imperial College London is striving to find a breakthrough in cancer research. Through Project DRUGS, it’s analysing billions of existing cancer drugs, matching them to genetic profiles and altering their structures. This is all in an attempt to improve the effectiveness of cancer treatment in the UK and give sufferers – present and future – hope.

Lecturer in Translational Data & Analytics and Computational Medicine at Imperial College London, Dr. Kiril Veselkov says DreamLab can help to “facilitate perspective clinical research in a smarter, data-driven fashion.” So, every time DreamLab users hit the pillow, they can sleep easy knowing that they’re bringing scientists within reach of this breakthrough. And what’s more – as it’s from the Vodafone Foundation, Vodafone customers don’t have to pay a thing for the data used to power the app.

So, if you want to join the fight against cancer and make a difference to the lives of the 360,000+ people diagnosed each year, then download the DreamLab app to your smartphone. Charge, sleep and fight cancer.

DreamLab isn’t the only technology driving innovation in the medical field. Discover the inspiring story of Lingoing, the digital platform breaking down communication barriers for d/Deaf people all over the UK.
